When driving around, you might hear some noises coming from different parts of your car. Some might be perfectly normal, but others might be warning signs that you need to visit a repair auto shop as soon as possible.
Here are some strange car noises that might be warning signs of impending problems:
Rattling Noises from the Wheels, Especially When Accelerating at Low Speeds
A rattling sound from the wheels might mean many things, but if it sounds like a coin eddying in a clothes dryer, which goes away at high speeds, then it could be there's a loose lug nut allowing free movement in a hup-cap. This usually happens when the wheel wasn't tightened properly during previous repairs. If this happens to your car, don't ignore the sound—plan for a visit to a mechanic as soon as possible.
Chirping Engine
If you are having a worn-out or loose serpentine belt under the hood, then there will be intermittent birds-like sounds coming from the engine. The serpentine belt drives the water pump, AC compressor, and alternator, among other essential components. Due to normal mechanical wear and tear from everyday use, the serpentine belt may become loose or damaged. If left unchecked, the belt may break while driving or cause permanent damage to the engine. For a ride, take your car to a mechanic for readjustment or replacement immediately after you hear a screening sound coming from the engine.
Whirring or Whining
If the whining is coming from the engine, it could mean anything from a failing water pump to issues with the AC system. If it's coming from the transmission, it could mean the transmission fluid level is either too high or too low. Either way, a whining sound can be inspected and rectified immediately.
Other strange engine sounds that may need your immediate attention include:
• Squealing, grinding, or growling noise when braking
• Tapping noise from the engine
• Clicking noise while turning
• A low-pitched humming noise from the drive train
• Popping sound coming from the front wheels when cornering
In most cases, unusual noises indicate either underlying problems or developing issues. For this reason, it's best to address the issues beforehand to avoid serious problems.
